What Can Cause Persistent Sleep Problems?

Sleep problems are rarely about one thing.

Stress, anxiety, pain, working patterns, responsibilities, habits, beliefs about sleep and life pressures can all affect your ability to sleep and recover.

Sometimes the original cause of the sleep problem has passed, but the pattern continues.

You may begin:

  • worrying about whether you will sleep;

  • watching the clock;

  • going to bed earlier to compensate;

  • staying in bed longer;

  • trying increasingly hard to make sleep happen;

  • changing routines repeatedly;

  • becoming anxious as bedtime approaches.

The more important sleep becomes, the more effort you may put into controlling it.

For some people, that effort becomes part of the problem.

That is why understanding your individual sleep pattern matters.

When Sleep Becomes a Battle, the Days Become Harder Too

Poor sleep can affect much more than bedtime.

It can influence:

  • mood;

  • concentration;

  • patience;

  • confidence;

  • energy;

  • motivation;

  • work;

  • relationships;

  • decision-making;

  • your sense of control;

  • physical and emotional wellbeing.

You may find yourself thinking about sleep throughout the day and worrying about the coming night before you have even reached bedtime.

Sleep can gradually become something you feel you have to manage rather than something that happens naturally.

The aim of support is to understand what is maintaining that cycle and help you move towards a more workable relationship with sleep.

Does This Sound Familiar?

Difficulty Falling Asleep

You go to bed tired, but your mind becomes active as soon as your head reaches the pillow.

It may feel as though your body is tired but your mind will not switch off.

Waking During the Night

You fall asleep reasonably well but wake during the night and struggle to return to sleep.

Your sleep may feel fragmented and you rarely wake feeling fully restored.

Early Morning Waking

You wake earlier than you want and cannot return to sleep.

You may begin the day already feeling depleted.

Stress-Related Sleep Problems

The pressures of work, relationships, health, family responsibilities or other parts of life seem to follow you into bed.

Your body may be resting, but your mind remains alert.

Sleep Anxiety

You become increasingly worried about whether you will sleep.

Bedtime itself may begin to trigger tension, frustration or anxiety.

Persistent Insomnia

Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or returning to sleep has continued for weeks or months and is affecting how you function during the day.

Trying Harder and Sleeping Worse

You have invested more and more effort into sleep but seem to be getting further away from it.

This can be part of what Sleep Well Hub describes as the Sleep Effort Trap.

You Should Not Have to Diagnose Yourself Before Asking for Help

Sleep problems can look similar on the surface while being maintained by very different factors.

One person may benefit from structured behavioural changes.

Another may be struggling primarily with anxiety, stress or hyperarousal.

Someone else may have developed habits and beliefs around sleep that are unintentionally keeping the problem going.

Pain, responsibilities, working patterns, medication, health issues or environmental factors may also be relevant.

That is why Sleep Well Hub does not assume that every sleep problem requires the same solution.

You do not need to decide which treatment or service you need before making contact.

We begin by understanding what is happening, now.

What Will My Free Sleep Clarity Call Do?

In approximately 15 minutes, we will clarify three things.

1. What May Be Disrupting Your Sleep

We discuss what is happening now, when the problem began and the patterns you are experiencing.

Why it matters:
So you can stop guessing and start understanding what may be contributing to the problem.

2. What You Have Already Tried

We look at the approaches you have used and whether they helped, made little difference or became difficult to maintain.

Why it matters:

So you do not waste more time repeating approaches that have already failed to help.

3. Which Next Step Appears Most Suitable

We consider which type of support appears most appropriate for your circumstances.

Why it matters:
So you can make a more informed decision about what to do next.

What Happens During the Sleep Clarity Call?

The call is a short, focused conversation with Mark Phillips, founder of Sleep Well Hub.

It is designed to understand your situation rather than overwhelm you with generic advice.

Step 1 — We Listen

You explain what has been happening with your sleep, how long it has been affecting you and how it is affecting your days.

Step 2 — We Explore the Pattern

We discuss possible contributing factors such as:

  • stress;

  • anxiety;

  • pain;

  • habits;

  • routines;

  • working patterns;

  • responsibilities;

  • beliefs about sleep;

  • previous attempts to fix the problem.

Step 3 — We Discuss Possible Routes Forward

If Sleep Well Hub appears able to help, we will explain which type of support may be most suitable and why.

If another form of support would be more appropriate, we will say so.

Your Next Step May Be One of Several Routes

There is no single programme that suits every sleep problem.

After your Sleep Clarity Call, your next step may include one of the following.

CBT-I Plus

CBT-I is widely regarded as the first-line psychological treatment for chronic insomnia.

Sleep Well Hub's CBT-I Plus approach uses CBT-I principles alongside NLP, clinical hypnosis and coaching where appropriate.

It may be suitable when insomnia has become persistent and patterns of behaviour, thought and sleep-related anxiety are maintaining the problem.

Sleep Coaching

Sleep coaching provides practical, personalised support where habits, routines, lifestyle, mindset or recovery patterns appear to be contributing to poor sleep.

It can help you understand what is realistically within your control and develop a practical plan around your circumstances.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy may be useful where stress, tension, anxiety, habitual responses or difficulty switching off are playing an important part in the problem.

It can be used independently or alongside other forms of support where appropriate.

Talking Therapies

Sometimes sleep problems are closely connected with wider emotional or psychological pressures.

Talking therapy provides space to explore issues such as stress, anxiety, difficult experiences, relationships or personal circumstances that may be affecting sleep.

What Is CBT-I and Can It Help Insomnia?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia, usually called CBT-I, is a structured psychological approach for persistent insomnia.

It focuses on the behaviours, thoughts and patterns that can maintain sleep problems after they have become established.

CBT-I may include techniques designed to:

  • strengthen the relationship between bed and sleep;

  • improve sleep timing;

  • reduce behaviours that unintentionally maintain insomnia;

  • address unhelpful beliefs about sleep;

  • reduce sleep-related anxiety;

  • rebuild confidence in your ability to sleep.

Sleep Well Hub uses CBT-I principles within its CBT-I Plus approach where they are appropriate to the individual.

Why Can Trying Harder to Sleep Make Things Worse?

Sleep is unusual because it cannot be forced in the same way as many other behaviours.

When sleep becomes difficult, it is understandable to try harder.

You may monitor the time, calculate how many hours remain, change routines repeatedly or attempt to control every aspect of bedtime.

But increased effort can create greater pressure around sleep.

That pressure can increase alertness precisely when your mind and body need to disengage.

Sleep Well Hub describes this pattern as the Sleep Effort Trap.

Understanding that cycle can be an important part of helping natural sleep return.

What Makes Personal Sleep Support Different From General Sleep Advice?

General sleep advice can be useful when the problem is straightforward.

Persistent sleep problems are often more complicated.

Personal sleep support allows us to look at:

  • your sleep pattern;

  • what changed when the problem began;

  • what keeps happening now;

  • what you have already tried;

  • your work and lifestyle;

  • stress and anxiety;

  • your routines;

  • your beliefs and expectations around sleep;

  • barriers to recovery;

  • what appears to be maintaining the problem.

The aim is not to give you more information for the sake of it.

It is to identify which information and intervention are relevant to you.

Personal Sleep Support With a Practical Approach

Hi, I’m Mark Phillips, founder of Sleep Well Hub.

I help people understand what may be getting in the way of sleep and develop a practical route towards better rest and better days.

My approach does not look at sleep in isolation.

Sleep can be influenced by what happens during the day, how we respond to stress, the habits we develop, the expectations we place on ourselves and the relationship we gradually build with sleep itself.

The aim is to help you understand the problem, identify a suitable way forward and become less dependent on constantly trying to manage your sleep.

Do I Need to Have Insomnia to Get Help?

No.

You may simply know that your sleep is not working well and is beginning to affect your life.

You might be:

  • struggling to fall asleep;

  • waking repeatedly;

  • waking too early;

  • sleeping but not feeling restored;

  • worrying constantly about sleep;

  • struggling around shift work;

  • unable to switch off;

  • experiencing stress-related sleep disruption.

The Sleep Clarity Call is designed to help determine what type of support, if any, may be appropriate.

Is Sleep Support Confidential?

Yes.

Your individual sleep support is confidential.

Information about your personal circumstances is not shared with employers, family members or other organisations without your permission, except where disclosure may be required by law or where there is a serious safeguarding concern.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you help if I cannot fall asleep even though I am tired?

Yes. Difficulty falling asleep despite feeling physically tired is common in insomnia and stress-related sleep problems.

The first step is understanding what is keeping your mind or nervous system alert when you are trying to sleep.

Can you help with waking during the night?

Yes. Repeated waking can have several possible contributors.

We look at the pattern, what happens when you wake and any factors that may be maintaining the difficulty returning to sleep.

Can you help with early morning waking?

Yes. Early waking can form part of an insomnia pattern.

Your sleep timing, stress, habits and other relevant factors can be explored before deciding on the appropriate approach.

What if anxiety is affecting my sleep?

Sleep and anxiety often interact.

Anxiety can interfere with sleep, while repeated poor sleep can increase worry about the next night.

Support can address both the sleep pattern and the anxiety surrounding it where appropriate.

What if I have tried everything?

Many people seeking support have already tried a substantial amount of sleep advice.

The Sleep Clarity Call is partly about understanding what you have already tried and identifying whether the underlying pattern has actually been addressed.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on the nature of the problem and the type of support recommended. After understanding your situation, we can explain what a realistic programme may involve.

Is CBT-I Plus the same as CBT-I?

No.

CBT-I is an established treatment approach for insomnia.

CBT-I Plus is Sleep Well Hub's approach that combines CBT-I principles with NLP, clinical hypnosis and coaching where appropriate.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can contact Sleep Well Hub directly.

If your symptoms suggest that medical assessment may be appropriate, we may recommend speaking with your GP or another healthcare professional.

Can sessions take place online?

Yes. Personal sleep support can be delivered online where appropriate.

Stop Guessing About Your Sleep

You do not need to know whether you need CBT-I, coaching, hypnotherapy or another approach before making contact.

That is what the initial conversation is for.

In your free 15-minute Sleep Clarity Call, we will discuss what is happening, what you have already tried and which next step appears most appropriate.

No pressure.

No obligation.

Just a conversation about your sleep and what may help.
