About Sleep Well Hub:
Our Vision for a Sleep-Positive Culture
Sleep Well Hub helps operationally demanding organisations understand where fatigue and inadequate recovery may be affecting their people, performance and resilience.
I founded Sleep Well Hub because fatigue is too often treated as an individual problem.
Employees may be advised to sleep better, become more resilient or manage their time differently, while the working patterns, operational pressures and workplace culture affecting their recovery remain unchanged.
Effective fatigue management requires a broader view.
My role is to help organisations identify where the real pressures sit, understand their effect on people and operations, and take practical, proportionate action.
Experience Built in Demanding Environments
My understanding of fatigue has developed through more than 35 years of Army and Police service and subsequent work within safety-critical industries.
I bring over 45 years’ experience across the Army, policing and safety-critical industries, with careers shaped by operational risk, major incident response, regulatory compliance, fatigue and human performance.
These roles involved shift work, disrupted sleep, extended operational demands and situations where clear thinking and sound decisions mattered.
During my Police service, I held national responsibility for preparing more than 4,000 personnel for deployment during major incidents. This required an understanding of how prolonged operations, pressure and inadequate recovery could affect performance and decision-making.
I also served as a Radiation Protection Adviser, Radiation Protection Supervisor and compliance officer, working with both UK nuclear regulators. This strengthened my appreciation of risk management, organisational responsibility and the importance of systems that support people to perform safely.
More recently, I have delivered Non-Technical Skills training across rail, road transport and offshore wind. Working with managers and frontline teams reinforced how closely fatigue, communication, decision-making and operational performance are connected.
Why I Created Sleep Well Hub
Sleep Well Hub grew from a straightforward observation:
Many organisations recognise the consequences of fatigue without fully understanding what is causing it.
The signs may appear as:
-
reduced concentration or slower decisions;
-
errors, near misses or inconsistent performance;
-
increased absence and presenteeism;
-
low energy, irritability or disengagement;
-
employees struggling to recover between shifts;
-
managers unsure how to discuss fatigue constructively.
These problems are rarely caused by one factor alone.
They may involve sleep knowledge, working hours, workload, recovery opportunity, biological differences, stress, sleep difficulties or workplace culture. Unless those factors are considered together, organisations risk applying isolated solutions to a wider operational problem.
The Business SONA Approach
I developed Business SONA as a practical organisational adaptation of the SONA sleep model.
It helps organisations examine four connected areas:
Sleep Literacy
What employees and managers understand about sleep, fatigue, recovery and performance.
Opportunity
Whether working patterns, workload, travel, culture and the working environment provide a realistic opportunity for recovery.
Need
How biological sleep need varies between people and changes with age, health, workload and accumulated sleep loss.
Ability
Whether employees can obtain restorative sleep when they have the opportunity, or whether stress, hyperarousal, pain or persistent sleep difficulties are preventing it.
Business SONA helps move the conversation beyond simply telling employees to sleep more. It provides a structure for identifying where responsibility and opportunity for improvement sit across the individual, the manager and the organisation.
How Sleep Well Hub Supports Organisations
Sleep Well Hub provides focused support for organisations that want to understand and reduce the effects of fatigue.
This can include:
-
Workforce Recovery Reviews;
-
Sleep Positive Culture Audits;
-
workplace fatigue and recovery workshops;
-
manager and leadership training;
-
support with fatigue-related policies and working practices;
-
targeted individual sleep and recovery support;
-
executive sleep and performance coaching.
The starting point is understanding the organisation’s actual situation.
Recommendations should reflect its workforce, operating environment, risks and practical constraints.
My Approach
I work as a specialist adviser, facilitator and challenging friend.
That means asking useful questions, testing assumptions and helping leaders look beyond the most obvious explanation. It also means keeping recommendations practical.
Organisations do not need another wellbeing initiative that creates activity without meaningful change. They need a clear understanding of where fatigue is affecting the business, what can reasonably be improved and where action will make the greatest difference.
My approach is:
Practical
Recommendations must work within real operational environments.
Evidence-Informed
Advice is guided by established sleep and fatigue research, alongside operational experience.
Proportionate
The scale of the response should match the organisation’s needs and level of risk.
Collaborative
Managers and employees often hold different parts of the same picture. Both perspectives matter.
Sustainable
The goal is to develop understanding and capability within the organisation, rather than create long-term dependence on an outside consultant.
Individual Sleep Support
Some employees and leaders have sufficient opportunity to sleep but remain unable to obtain the restorative sleep they need.
Where appropriate, I also provide confidential individual support through CBT-I Plus.
CBT-I is recognised by the NHS as the gold-standard treatment for persistent insomnia.
My CBT-I Plus approach combines principles from CBT-I with Neuro-Linguistic Programming, clinical hypnosis and results-focused coaching.
This individual support remains separate from organisational reporting. Personal information is treated confidentially, with clear boundaries agreed at the outset.
The Purpose Behind the Work
My aim is to help change how organisations understand fatigue.
Fatigue is not simply about whether someone went to bed early enough. It is shaped by the interaction between operational demands, recovery opportunity, biological need, individual ability and workplace culture.
When organisations understand those connections, they can make better decisions for their people and their performance.
Workforce performance starts with recovery.
Start the Conversation
A free 15-minute Workforce Recovery Call provides an opportunity to discuss:
-
what you are currently seeing within your workforce;
-
where fatigue or inadequate recovery may be affecting operations;
-
what your organisation has already tried;
-
whether a review, audit, workshop or another form of support would be appropriate.
There is no obligation and no prepared sales presentation. The purpose is to understand the situation and identify a sensible next step.
